Long distance relationships are tricky, there's no denying it, but that isn’t to say you shouldn't enter into one. If you fall in love with someone who lives far away or your long term partner reveals that they need to move to the other side of the world for a while, don't despair. Instead, start thinking very realistically about how much you care for each other and the kind of compromises you'd be wiling to make to stay together.

If you think you have a relationship worth fighting for, one of the first things you need to do is sit down and work out a set of ground rules together. What these are will vary widely from couple to couple, but it's very important to set some rules in stone. Discuss things like putting aside time to call each other every day or have a frank discussion about how often you'll have the chance to visit each other and whether it's likely one of you will be more financially or practically able to travel frequently than the other.

Something else you'll want to talk about from the very start is where you see your relationship going. It's often a lot easier to make a long distance relationship work when you have a specific end goal in mind. This means talking frankly about what you want for the future and how you'll achieve it. When couples live apart to take advantage of a study programme or a job with a set time limit, the end goal can be easy to identify, but it may be a little trickier if there is no one specific, outside pressure dictating when you'll be able to be together again.

Trust is a massive issue for all long distance relationships. When you don’t have the chance to see your partner regularly, you'll have to be able to put your faith in them. Communicating regularly by phone, email or letter can certainly help you feel closer to your partner, but you'll have to accept the fact that they will be making new friends and having new experiences without you. There are few things as damaging to a relationship as jealousy, so you need to able to trust their intentions wholeheartedly.

Another potential trap to avoid is putting your life on pause. Just because your partner is no longer living near you it doesn’t mean you should hang back and save life experiences for the time when you'll be together again. To be a well rounded person and a healthy half of a couple, you need to be able to live your own life. Find ways to share your experiences with each other over the phone or send each other pictures of the fun things you do and remind each other how much fun you'll also have together when the time comes.

Staying in touch and talking frequently is one of the most essential things you can do to keep your relationship together. Whether you need to find deals for cheap calls to Poland or look for cut price minutes to America, make sure you work out a way to speak to each other often.
